5 Essential Tips for a Stress-Free Photoshoot with Kids | Northwest Indiana Family Photographer
Family and cake smash photoshoots are a cherished way to capture memories, but getting kids to cooperate—especially active or neurodiverse children—can feel like a daunting task. The good news? With some thoughtful planning and the right approach, your session can be an enjoyable experience for everyone. Here are five of my tips to help you prepare for a stress-free photoshoot with kids.
1. Choose the Right Photographer
Finding a photographer who understands how to work with children is key. Look for someone experienced with families, particularly those who are accommodating to kids with unique needs. A good photographer will know how to adapt to high-energy moments, take breaks as needed, and create a welcoming environment. I, myself, am autistic. I also grew up helping to raise 3 active boys with their own special needs, and am currently raising my son--who is also on the spectrum! I offer "play dates" for all new kiddos in my studio so we all have a chance to meet and get to know each other in my studio without the pressure of a photoshoot!
Tip: Search for terms like “family photographer near me” or “kids photographer in Northwest Indiana” to start the process of finding your perfect photographer.
2. Prepare Your Kids in Advance
Talk to your kids about our photoshoot ahead of time to set expectations. In the weeks and days leading up, hype up the experience! This will get them excited to be a part of the session instead of scared or apprehensive. Share what we’ll be doing, where they’ll be going, and how much fun it will be! We will play games, sing songs, and--for cake smashes--get messy! If your child is neurodiverse, consider using social stories or visuals to help them feel more comfortable with the process. I personally love this site:
For younger children, bring along a favorite toy or blanket for familiarity, and let them know it's okay to take breaks if needed. For any session involving kiddos, I encourage a "play date" at my studio where your child can meet me and explore the studio in a less pressured environment. The day of our photoshoot, we are likely making a lot of noise to get their attention and capture those giggles. However, for many kids this can also be scary and overstimulating! A few days before our session, setting up just an hour meet and greet can help set expectations and take away some of that initial stranger danger!
3. Dress Comfortably and Simply
Choose outfits that are comfortable for your kids and avoid anything itchy or restrictive. Soft fabrics and breathable clothing work best, especially for active children. While coordinating colors look great in photos, don’t stress over perfection—happy, relaxed kids will shine brighter than the most styled outfits.

4. Bring Snacks and Breaks
A well-fed kid is a happy kid! Pack non-messy snacks and water to keep energy levels steady during the shoot. For neurodiverse children, consider bringing sensory toys or headphones if they might feel overwhelmed. I also suggest letting me know what some of their favorite songs are, or providing me with links to favorite videos to use as a last-ditch effort to getting their attention.
Your photographer should understand the need for breaks and allow time for kids to regroup if they start feeling tired or overstimulated.
5. Embrace the Chaos
Kids are naturally energetic and curious, and that’s okay! Some of the best photos come from candid, unposed moments running around or being chased. If your child needs to run or jump, let them! As a skilled photographer, I will work with those moments to create beautiful, authentic memories.
For parents of neurodiverse children, communicate any specific needs or preferences ahead of time. Are they sensitive to loud sounds, flashing lights (this is important for studio lighting as mine does flash!). This helps me plan the session to ensure everyone feels at ease.
Bonus Tip: Trust Your Photographer
Relax and enjoy the session—I am here to handle the details and capture your family’s unique story. The goal is to celebrate your family just as you are, whether that means a little extra energy or a few breaks along the way. Some kiddos also do better for cake smash sessions or portraits when mom and/or dad are out of sight and out of mind. Sometimes having you in the room can pose a challenge since all they want to do is snuggle with you! If you don't mind, I will sometimes ask you to head into the playroom and let me work my magic. After calming your kiddo down and gaining their trust, the session might go better when there is only one adult to give instructions.
Final Thoughts
Family and cake smash photoshoots don’t have to be stressful, even with active or neurodiverse kids. By planning ahead, working with a compassionate photographer (Hi, that's me!), and focusing on fun, you’ll create beautiful memories to treasure for years to come.
